Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.Rating: 8/10PROS:- In just a few pages, the social, class, and economic differences between the main characters are well established. The divide is shown more and more clearly as the book progresses, yet so is the desperate need the men have for each other, both physical and emotional. And even though they come from such vastly different backgrounds, each of them tries very hard to see where the other man is coming from.- Seeing a rough, coarse character fall in love—particularly when the author stays true to his character and doesn't make him all mushy but instead provides just hints of tenderness here and there and silent, aching longing—really gets to me. This is one of my favorite descriptions of Silas: he had "a heart so poorly suited and so unaccustomed to love that he felt it might burst its banks like one of London's choked, fetid rivers."- The author brings in more likeable secondary characters to this book, as she did in the first book in the series. She's building a nice little fictional world here. And I like how the events of the first half or so of this book line up with events from the first book. We get to see several of the same scenes from A Fashionable Indulgence from a different character's perspective, which adds depth to the entire storyline.CONS:- I'm not a big fan of politics, either current or historical. One character here is a politician, and the other is a writer of political pamphlets. So there's much more discussion of politics here than I want to concern myself with on a Friday evening.- There's a decent amount of unpleasantness in this one. The men are at odds with each other for much of the book, arguing and even physically fighting at one point, and sometimes saying awful things to each other. I found it quite painful to read parts of it.Overall comments: This book shows (in a non-graphic, non-detailed way) how psychologically damaging it can be to have sexual urges that are outside the norm and to have to try to explain them to people you care about, particularly when those people find them repulsive. It's a nice example of how love can happen between any two people, even when they seem poorly suited for each other. The book isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was very good. I liked the time period. I liked the politics. It's not a time period I know much about, so it is always interesting to learn something new. I also really liked the physical descriptions of the characters. Older, graying hair, stooped shoulders and a little belly. How often do you see that in a book? Great! Makes you wonder who is on the cover really?? That's kind of disappointing really, but that's marketing for you.The negative: (spolier ahead) I really felt let down by the ending. I guess it's more historically accurate this way, but the HEA is the rich gentleman dining with his rich friends while his ex-revolutionary boyfriend is now a servant. Good enough to sleep with, good enough to call equal when no one is looking, but not good enough to know your friends. Again, maybe a different ending would have been too unrealistic, but it still felt like a huge letdown.And Richard came off as such an a-hole I can't bring myself to read his book.
